On December 12th I hosted my very first Annual Cookie Exchange Party, and it was a wonderful success. I had been looking forward to bringing friends and family together for a warm, relaxed holiday gathering, and the cookie swap was the perfect way to do it. The atmosphere was cozy, the conversation flowed, and the cookies were unbelievably delicious.
If you’ve never been to a cookie exchange — sometimes called a cookie swap — it’s a simple and delightful concept. Each guest bakes several dozen of a single cookie recipe from scratch, brings them to the party, and provides a box to take home samples. In return, every participant leaves with a variety of cookie flavors without having to bake dozens of different kinds.
For my event I invited about 16 people. It was the perfect size — big enough for a wide variety of recipes, but small enough to feel intimate. Guests mingled, shared baking tips, and sampled one another’s treats. Hosting during the busy holiday season gave everyone a chance to relax for a few hours and enjoy good company and festive flavors.
One of the best parts of a cookie exchange is variety. You get to try many different cookies without having to bake a huge assortment yourself. It’s an efficient and fun way to discover new favorites and expand your holiday recipe repertoire.
In addition to the cookie swap, I set up a hot cocoa bar with all the fixings for rich, sweet hot chocolate. Guests loved customizing their drinks with whipped cream, marshmallows, flavored syrups, and a variety of toppings. It was a cozy complement to the cookie tasting and made the evening feel extra festive.
I prepared a few special goodies for the party, although most of the focus was on the cookies everyone brought. To make the event even more memorable, I collected recipes from all the guests and compiled them into a small recipe book titled “1st Annual Cookie Exchange Party 2010 Recipe Book.” It was a lovely keepsake and a practical resource so everyone could recreate their favorites at home.
