We make waffles at least once a week. The phrase “Mama, I want pancake waffles (not potato waffles mama)” is a weekly refrain here.
This year alone we’ve gone through two waffle makers (one failed on first use), tried six different waffle recipes, used litres of maple syrup, and a ridiculous amount of sprinkles and jam. Dedication? Absolutely.

So I was excited to try the Smart Waffle Maker from Sage Appliances. I’ll review it below, but spoiler: waffle making around here has never been better.
First, here’s a simple recipe for classic waffles: golden and crisp on the outside, tender inside. It’s a great basic waffle batter that welcomes any topping—fruit, bacon, roasted peaches, or even a spoonful of spicy stew for a different twist.

- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 50 g sugar (optional)
- 300 g self-raising flour
- 125 g butter, melted
- 430 ml milk
Instructions
- Switch the Smart Waffle Maker on, select the classic setting and choose the browning level you prefer.
- Preheat the waffle maker until the indicator shows it is ready.
- Whisk together the milk, melted butter and beaten eggs, then set aside.
- Mix the flour and sugar (if using) in a large bowl and make a well in the centre.

- Repeat until the batter is used up.

Now that you’ve enjoyed the waffles, here’s the Smart Waffle Maker review. Part of the Heston Blumenthal range, this machine lives up to its name: it cooks waffles intelligently and consistently.
The Smart Waffle Maker lets you choose batter type and browning level so you can make classic, Belgian, buttermilk, chocolate or custom waffles to your exact preference. On the classic setting, my preferred browning level is five.

The waffles this machine produces are satisfyingly thick—like the ones from a Belgian street stall: tall, crisp edges and soft inside. They look incredible stacked with maple syrup and taste even better.
Operating the Smart Waffle Maker is straightforward: power on, pick waffle type and browning level, wait for it to heat, add batter, close and cook until the beep. If someone wants a darker waffle, press the “A Bit More” button for extra color. Cleaning is simple—just a quick wipe down.

A common annoyance is batter spilling over during cooking. The Smart Waffle Maker has a wide wrap-around moat that catches excess batter and cooks it, so you get less mess and a bit extra to nibble on.
Included accessories: a measuring cup to portion batter, and a recipe booklet with four recipes and tips from Heston. Practical and thoughtful additions for waffle lovers.
The Smart Waffle Maker is sturdy, stylish and consistent. It makes some of the best waffles I’ve had. If you value great waffles, this is an excellent kitchen gadget.
