Amish News: Tragedies, Traditional Recipes, and Notable Figures

By Kevin Williams

The title says it all: it’s been a difficult week in the Amish community, with several late-summer accidents that remind us that, while Amish life is generally peaceful, it can also be unexpectedly dangerous.

Here’s a summary of the incidents from this past week. We begin in Upstate New York’s North Country:

TWO AMISH MEN DROWN: Two men who went out fishing one afternoon did not return after their boat capsized. Local reports provide more detail about the search and the outcome.

AMISH HOUSE FIRE: Fortunately, no one was injured when an Amish family’s home caught fire in Pennsylvania. Reportedly, the family attempted to salvage belongings even after flames were coming through the roof, putting themselves at risk.

HIT AND RUN INVOLVING A BUGGY: In another incident a motor vehicle struck an Amish buggy and fled the scene. Remarkably, there were no injuries. Authorities are asking the public to be on the lookout for the vehicle involved.

DRIVER PLEADS NOT GUILTY IN FATAL CRASH: A driver accused of swerving toward buggies before causing a fatal crash has pleaded not guilty. The case remains under investigation and proceedings are ongoing.

On a lighter note, a few community and lifestyle items drew attention this week:

RETURN TO AMISH (FICTIONAL SERIES): Characters Carmela and Jeremiah are back together in the ongoing Amish-themed fictional series. Fans of the show will recognize the storyline developments and follow-ups.

RECIPES: The Quincy, Illinois newspaper was the first in the United States to publish “The Amish Cook” column back in 1991, and it still appears today. While the recipes featured aren’t strictly traditional Amish dishes, the column highlights a local cook who shared a variety of recipes including sauerkraut casserole, “egg roll in a bowl,” Super Potato Soup, and more. These are approachable, home-style dishes that readers have enjoyed.

Related Recipes: Suggested dishes inspired by community cooking include “Hubby’s Favorite Potato Casserole,” Fried Potatoes, Sauerkraut Brownies, Sauerkraut and Sausage, and Sauerkraut Rounds. These recipes reflect hearty, comfort-food traditions often found in regional and community cookbooks.
