Finding the right inspiration for this cake took a little longer than usual. I know Chris well—he’s engaged to my sister—so there were countless directions I could have taken: football, music and many other interests. But above all, Chris loves coffee.
My sister says that for the past 2½ years Chris has never missed having an espresso when he comes home from work. He recently bought a new coffee machine that uses pods, much like the small pod decorating the top of the cake. That detail sparked the concept.

The tiny espresso cups are actually mini coffee cakes, and making them was a real pleasure (I’ll share a tutorial soon). Since I no longer have an edible printer, I painted the logo freehand on the top tier—definitely a nerve-wracking step but worth the effort.
We surprised Chris with the cake last night during a warm family dinner to celebrate his 30th birthday. The presentation included a sparkler-style candle for a festive touch.
Happy 30th birthday, Chris—wishing you a brilliant day and many more coffees to come!
