If you’ve shopped for non-toxic or organic mattresses, you’ve probably come across Avocado. It’s one of the most recognizable organic mattress brands and consistently receives positive reviews.
In early 2022 Avocado introduced the Eco Organic Mattress, one of the most affordable organic mattresses available. Starting at $699 for a twin, it offers a lower-cost entry point compared with other mattresses in Avocado’s lineup.
After more than a year of use, we wanted to evaluate whether the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress delivers on safety, value, comfort, and long-term quality. Below is our experience and key details to help you decide if it might be right for you.

- Do You Really Need a Non-Toxic/Organic Mattress?
This review is not sponsored. We were gifted the mattress to test, and we may receive compensation if you purchase through certain links. We only recommend products we trust.
Editor’s note: The first half of this review is a Q&A with a friend and colleague, Lauren, who has slept on the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress for more than a year. The second half summarizes specs, materials, and practical details about Avocado products.

What is important to you in a mattress?
After having my first child I became intentional about reducing toxic chemicals at home. I switched water filtration, replaced cleaning products, prioritized organic food, and moved toward safer skincare. Buying a mattress felt important but also overwhelming: it’s a large expense and a major factor in daily rest and long-term health.
I was searching for a mattress that balanced comfort, affordability, and genuinely safe materials. I wanted to avoid synthetic foams, toxic flame retardants, and hidden glues, and I preferred certified organic materials when possible.
We also needed more space: our old mattress was over ten years old and a queen, and with three kids who often end up in bed with us, a larger mattress was essential.

What made Avocado appealing to you?
Avocado is a well-known name in organic mattresses, and its transparency and certifications stood out. The Eco Organic Mattress carries numerous third-party certifications—GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde Free—while the company is also B Corp and Climate Neutral certified. Those labels aren’t perfect but they add meaningful reassurance about materials and supply chain integrity.
Avocado also uses blockchain verification for material traceability, which increases accountability in sourcing. The brand’s many positive customer reviews and risk-reduction policies—100-night sleep trial, one-year warranty, and free shipping—also made the purchase decision easier.

Give us the TL;DR: How do you like the Avocado Green mattress after sleeping in it for a year?!
We love it. The mattress felt comfortable quickly, though my husband took a few weeks to adjust to the latex top layer. Now he prefers it, even when he travels and sleeps on lower-quality hotel mattresses. The kids find it comfortable too. Practical touches like four side handles make moving and rotating the king-size mattress manageable for one person.

How was the delivery and setup process?
Delivery was straightforward. The mattress arrived in a boxed package that required an adult signature. Unboxing was simple: slide it out, cut the plastic, and the mattress expanded immediately. We slept on it the same day; Avocado recommends waiting about 30 minutes after unwrapping and notes full expansion takes a few hours. The company also offers white-glove delivery for an extra fee if you prefer in-home setup.

Did the mattress smell at all when you got it?
No noticeable odor or off-gassing was detected when unboxing.
How’s the firmness?
Avocado rates the Eco Organic Mattress as medium-firm (about 5/10), which matches our experience. It works well as a family bed—firm enough for support yet comfortable for side sleeping. The Eco option is not customizable, but Avocado offers toppers and other mattress models with different firmness profiles.
Do you or your partner have any back/body pain? And if so, has the Eco Organic mattress been helpful for that?
Both my husband and I had some back and body pain before replacing our old mattress. Since switching to the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress, our pain has improved dramatically. Part of that may come from moving to a larger bed, but the mattress’s support and construction also feel like significant contributors to better sleep and reduced aches.
What about sleeping positions?
We both sleep on our sides and find the medium-firm feel supportive while offering enough contouring. Avocado recommends most of its mattresses for side sleepers; back and stomach sleepers may prefer firmer options or different models in the Avocado lineup.
How about temperature regulation?
We haven’t experienced overheating. Natural materials like latex, wool, and pocketed coils typically promote airflow and dissipate heat better than dense petroleum-based foams.
Does the mattress sag at all?
We haven’t noticed meaningful sagging. The mattress edges show minor variation in straightness since day one, but edge support feels adequate and we’ve had no issues with feeling like we might roll off.
What about sound? Does it squeak or make noise when you move around?
It’s quiet. We haven’t heard squeaks or other noise from the springs.

How about motion transfer?
Compared to a traditional innerspring mattress we previously owned, the Eco Organic mattress has less bounce and reduced motion transfer, which helps when children climb into bed. It still has some gentle responsiveness compared with memory foam, so partners will feel movement less than on a spring bed but more than on dense foam.
Is there anything you or your husband do NOT like about the mattress?
There’s nothing major we dislike. My husband needed a short adjustment period to get used to the latex layer, but that passed quickly. One consideration: Avocado is part of a parent company that also owns Brentwood Home, a brand that uses non-organic materials. That ownership structure gave us a moment of pause, but Avocado’s product transparency and certifications remain intact.
Is there anyone you think the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress would NOT be a good fit for?
If you need a highly customizable mattress—such as interchangeable layers or very different firmness on each side—Avocado’s Eco Organic model may not meet those requirements. Brands that allow layer swapping or custom configurations might be better for couples with conflicting firmness preferences or individuals whose comfort needs change over time.
People who specifically want the deep sink of traditional memory foam won’t get that with this mattress, since true memory foam is polyurethane-based and not compatible with natural, organic construction. Avocado’s Latex model provides a closer feel for those who want some foam-like contouring without synthetic memory foam.
What would you say to someone who’s on the fence about buying an Avocado mattress?
Try a showroom if one is nearby, or schedule a virtual consultation if not. Avocado offers 30-minute video appointments to view and ask questions about mattresses. Also compare other non-toxic options to find the best match for your sleep style, budget, and return policies. Pay attention to sleep trials, warranties, and delivery terms so you’re protected if the mattress isn’t a fit.

More Questions About Avocado Mattresses
Is there a weight limit on Avocado mattresses?
Avocado recommends up to 350 pounds per person (700 pounds total) as a general guideline. Heavier sleepers should also confirm compatible bed frames and support systems.
Is the Eco Organic Mattress flippable?
No. The Eco Organic Mattress is not designed to be flipped.
How often should you rotate your Avocado mattress?
Avocado recommends rotating the mattress once a month for the first six months to encourage even compression of the wool layers. After six months, rotate every other month. Following these guidelines is important to maintain warranty and sleep trial eligibility.

Where are Avocado mattresses made?
Avocado mattresses are handcrafted in their Los Angeles, California factory.
How long does an Avocado Mattress last?
Avocado states their mattresses are designed to last up to 25 years and cites independent durability testing showing minimal height reduction after simulated use. As with any mattress, longevity depends on use and care.
How do you clean your Avocado mattress?
A mattress protector reduces the need for cleaning. For light refreshes, sprinkle baking soda, let sit 30 minutes, then vacuum. For stains, address them quickly with spot cleaning using a mild non-toxic detergent, enzymatic cleaner for bodily fluids, or a diluted peroxide solution depending on the stain—always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Avocado provides detailed cleaning guidance for tougher stains.
Why do they call it Avocado Mattress?
The brand name plays on “green” values and the popular avocado fruit—simple and memorable.
Other Avocado Products
Apart from mattresses, Avocado sells bed frames, furniture, pillows, sheets, toppers, duvets, protectors, and select loungewear and bath products. They offer a broad range of bedding and bedroom accessories, including several items designed for children. If you want to outfit an entire bedroom with natural and organic options, Avocado provides a wide selection.

Do You Really Need a Non-Toxic/Organic Mattress?
Because we spend so much time in bed and our bodies rely on sleep for repair and detoxification, a healthier sleep environment can support overall wellbeing. If reducing chemical exposure matters to you, an organic or non-toxic mattress is worth considering alongside other factors like comfort, budget, and sleep preferences.
