A few years ago, on a road trip from Texas to Tennessee, we stopped for dinner and discovered an Italian Margarita on the menu. I ordered one to share — and then another. Back home I experimented until I developed the version we like best. In our house, “Margarita Thursday” often features this Italian Margarita Cocktail recipe.

I enjoy these margaritas in a classic margarita glass with a sugared rim, though mason jars with straws work nicely too (pictured above). The recipe is easy to scale if you want to double or triple it to serve a crowd.

Ingredients
- 1 shot tequila
- 1 shot amaretto
- 1/2 shot triple sec
- 3/4 cup sweet and sour mix
- 1/4 fresh orange (quarter)
- 1/4 fresh lime (quarter)
- sugar (for rim)
Instructions
- Pour a little water in a shallow bowl or plate.
- Place sugar in a separate shallow bowl or plate.
- Dip the rim of a glass in the water, then dip it in the sugar to coat the rim.
- Fill a shaker (or protein shaker) with about 1 cup of ice.
- Add tequila, amaretto, triple sec, and the sweet and sour mix to the shaker.
- Wash and cut an orange and a lime into quarters. Squeeze the juice from one orange quarter and one lime quarter into the shaker.
- Close the shaker and shake well until chilled.
- Strain or pour into the prepared sugar-rimmed glass. Cheers!
- If you prefer, skip the sugared rim and serve in a mason jar with a straw. The recipe scales easily — double or triple to make a small pitcher for sharing.
Notes
This Italian Margarita is a great option if you want a sweeter, almond-forward twist on the classic. Use fresh citrus for the best flavor.
