School is back and the cookie jar needed replenishing. While rummaging through the pantry I found a bag of Kit Kats Andy’s mom left for the kids after Halloween. The girls had complained they didn’t get enough candy, so I turned those Kit Kats into cookies and scored some major parenting points.
I try to keep our cookie jar stocked. Classics like Reese’s Pieces Chocolate Chip Cookies, Strawberry Sugar Cookies and Cheesecake-Stuffed Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies always disappear fast—especially when paired with a glass of milk. It’s surprising I hadn’t made Kit Kat cookies sooner since Kit Kats are my go-to Halloween pick. If you love Kit Kats and chocolate, these cookies are a must: the dough is essentially a vehicle for all that candy and chocolate, and I’m not complaining.
The kids were thrilled. As soon as Camryn climbed into the car after school, Leighton squealed, “Mama made cookies!” They chatted about cookies (and swimming lessons) all the way home—mostly cookies.

Kit Kat Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups Kit Kat candy coarsely chopped
- 1 cup chocolate chips
Instructions

Cream together shortening, brown sugar and sugar.

Add eggs, hot water and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy.

Stir in flour, baking soda and salt until just combined.

Fold in the chopped Kit Kats and chocolate chips.

Using a medium cookie scoop, drop rounded portions of dough onto a baking sheet lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper.

Bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
