Loreto, Mexico is a quiet gem on the Baja Peninsula—an ideal choice when you want a peaceful escape and genuine relaxation away from the crowds.

When many travelers from Southern California head to Mexico, they usually choose Cabo for its convenience and abundance of resorts. But Loreto offers a different kind of appeal: a slower pace, scenic surroundings and a more intimate coastal town experience.

Loreto sits roughly four hours north of La Paz and about seven hours north of Cabo. Its more northerly position also means a shorter flight from Los Angeles—approximately two hours compared with the roughly two-and-a-half-hour flight to Cabo—making it an easy and convenient getaway.

One of Loreto’s greatest advantages is that it lacks Cabo’s high-energy party scene. If you prefer serene beaches, relaxed evenings and restorative activities over rowdy spring break crowds or nonstop nightlife, Loreto fits the bill.

I visited Loreto during a wellness week at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto and was grateful for the invitation. Initially I hesitated—work and deadlines were demanding—but friends encouraged me to prioritize downtime. It turned out to be exactly what I needed.

During my week there I embraced downtime: lazy mornings, poolside reading, multiple massages and sunrise beach yoga—yes, even paddleboard yoga. I snorkeled vibrant coral reefs, explored Loreto’s historic center, toured an impressive golf course, learned about tequila production and enjoyed excellent Mexican cuisine—gluten-free options included at Villa del Palmar’s restaurants. The unstructured pace made the week deeply restorative.

Loreto offers plenty of activities for those who want them—boating, snorkeling, yoga, cultural tours and more—or simply the option to do nothing at all. That flexibility is part of the town’s charm, and sometimes choosing to do nothing is the best decision for your well-being.

Special thanks to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto for the invitation to their wellness week and for accommodating my dietary needs. The hospitality made the stay even more enjoyable, and all opinions are my own.
